Welcome to the Corrado Library

Thankful for the best NEW BOOKS of the Year.

I am thankful for the upcoming Looooong weekend, and for all of the great new books we have in the Library (that would be great to read over a long weekend for some non-digital learning and enjoyment).  Much of this list is fiction (not in the sense that I made it up, but rather that the books are novels:  some of the Best Books of 2017 according to Jerene Battisti & Angelina Benedetti, two Rock Star-level Librarians from King County, WA), and some of it is based on student and faculty request (reminder: you can fill out a book-order-request on the library website  http://libguides.centralcatholichigh.org )

Lots of Books to talk about, so lets dig in before the Tryptophan kicks in (or the urban legend makes us act like it does )...

We have two new ones from authors on our Summer Reading list: M.T. Anderson's Landscape with Invisible Hand is deep commentary on current society and technology masked in science fiction and art history (Aliens "invade", solve our problems, and then withhold Health Care from people who can't afford it...). It has a tiny "To Serve Man" vibe.     Marina Budhos (Watched) and Marc Aronson serve up non-fiction about love and photojournalism in the 1930s:  Eyes of the World: Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and the invention of modern photojournalism.

Jason Reynolds (All American Boys; The Boy in the Black Suit) was the featured Author at the same conference that I learned about all of these books. He's fantastic.  His newest book Long Way Down  is a novel-in-verse about a young man, a gun, and one minute in an elevator that could change his life forever.  We also have his Miles Morales: Spider-man, a novel about the Black, Latino Spider-man.

And if you want more novels-in-verse,  the award winning Loving vs. Virginia narrative-non-fiction-in-verse of exchanges between the  couple that broke marriage segregation in Virginia.   And also Sharon Creech's Love That Dog (which Jason Reynolds says is still the best novel-in-verse of all time (and made me rethink my feelings on poetry, and also is the only book that makes me tear-up just thinking about it)).

Nic Stone's Dear Martin (cover blurbs from Reynolds, and Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give)) is another quick and powerful read on race-relations in the US.

Lets talk Non-Fiction for a minute or two:  Fault Lines in the Constitution, by Cynthia and Sanford Levinson is an accessible look at the impacts the Framers' fights and flaws are still having today.  The March Against Fear (National Geographic) is a concise overview of a pivotal event from the 1960s' Civil Rights movement. Girl Rising, the companion to the video, profiles young women making a difference around the world, and teacher-recommended A Moonless, Starless Sky focuses on men and women fighting extremism on the African continent.

Readers of Ready Player One who want to dig deeper into my generation's nostalgia can plunk a quarter into Game On: Video Game History from Pong and Pac-man to Mario, Minecraft and more.    I think there's probably some of that Football stuff happening next weekend, and Steve Sheinkin's Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team talks about 'the team that invented Football' , the greatest athlete of the 20th century, (and the injustice surrounding Native American 'education').  Poetry fans may(or may not!) enjoy Killing Poetry: Blackness and the makeing of Slam and Spoken Word Communities.

Artists, STEMmers, Makers and more are directed to design-thinking guru Don Norman's The Design of Everydaythings ( a must read for empathic design), and social/evolutionary psychology enthusiasts, witers, and/or those looking to understand why and how people are so easily persuaded, may want to read The Storytelling Animal: how stories make us human, or the oldie-but-goodie I am Right, You are Wrong: from Rock Logic to Water Logic by lateral thinker Edward DeBono.

I'm going to be honest:  our History collection, especially when it comes to Asia and the Pacific, is woefully outdated, and when it isn't, is woefully War-centric. We're going to fix that, starting with Vietnam: a New History.   In addition to that, two works of fiction by Vietnamese/Vietnamese-American authors:  Pioneer Girl, Bich Minh Nguyen's story of a young Vietnamese woman and her love of Little House on the Prairie; and The Reeducation of Cherry Truong, by Aimee Phan.  (and an additional plug here for the graphic novel The Best We Could Do).  Also, Pacific Worlds: a History of Seas, Peoples and Cultures is an academic, but accessible, history of Polynesia and the Pacific.
Okay, Fiction, The Main Course:  Fantasy fans of hefty tomes will be happy to hear that we have The Way of Kings, book one of The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, as well as the Alice In Wonderland "prequel" Heartless, perennial favorite Marissa Meyer's origin story for the Red Queen.  Bordering on fantasy, though set in something resembling the real-world except "Symbology" is an academic discipline and everything is secretly connected by art-history, is Dan Brown's newest: Origin.  Also a prequel to Elizabeth Wein's Code Name Verity, The Pearl Thief.
A Psalm for Lost Girls, by Katie Bayerl, is the story of a small Massachusetts town's efforts to have their local 'saint', a recently deceased 17-year old producer of miracles named Tess, canonized. Printz Award winner Marcus Sedgwick's Saint Death is the story of one day in the life on the U.S.-Mexico border. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,  by Erika Sanchez is a tale of expectations, sisterhood, and loss.

Love and Friendship stories include: The Whole Thing Together: two children who share almost everything, but  have never met.... Windfall: Unrequited love changes when someone wins the literal lottery. Ramona Blue (by Wordstock presenter Julie Murphy), a fish-out-of-water in Mississippi questioning her own identity. When Dimple Met Rishi, arranged marriage in modern America? this will turn out well... Release (Patrick Ness) another "one day that will change your life" tale. Radio Silence: friendship forms over a podcast.

Oh, and a hardcover copy of Catcher in the Rye, and another copy of The Sun is Also a Star (to be confused with every other book that has a cover that is white with a burst of colorful scribbles, like Robin Benaway's Far From the Tree).

If you need a "moment of zen," over the long weekend, remember:  There is No Right Way to Meditateand Other Lessons, by Yumi Sakugawa.

And, lest I forget, The One Memory of Flora Banks is the story of a young woman who lost the ability to make new short-term memories when a dangerous tumor was removed, though she remembers kissing her best friend's boyfriend...
