NEW BOOKS, for Hungry Readers, in the Library...

by Nic Netzel on 2020-11-23T08:00:00-08:00 in General Interest | 0 Comments

While not quite in time for students to read over the homebound holiday, this hefty helping of new books may still satisfy some book hungry faculty.

Before the meal, we acknowledge that we are on stolen land, and identify that land in the National Geographic Atlas of Indian Nations.

Side dishes include a variety of ruminations on the American Condition

  • Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution, by James McPherson (quoted in this years Con-Team questions)
  • both regular and young readers' editions of Dear America, Notes of an Undocumented Citizen, by Jose Antonio Vargas
  • Call Me American by Somalian refugee Abdi Nor Iftin
  • both regular and young readers' editions of One Person, No Vote: how voter suppression is destroying our democracy by Carol Anderson
  • Dissenter on the Bench: Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life and work by Victoria Ortiz, a teen-accessible biography.
  • and, already checked out by a student, Barack Obama's memoir, A Promised Land.

The main course, as ever, is fiction:

  • Tiffany Jackson's Grown is a murder mystery featuring an up and coming performer.
  • Kim Johnson's This is My America is story of daughters, sisters, and a callout of the racism inherent in the US Justice system
  • Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam (one of the Exonerated Five) co-wrote the Novel-in-Verse, Punching the Air
  • Furia , by Yamile Saied Mendezis an Argentina-set story of first love and futbol.
  • Girl, Unframed is Deb Calett'si newest; A thriller about art and unwanted attentions.
  • A disgraced high school wrestler falls in with a dangerous crowd in Brawler, by Neil Connelly,
  • In Accidental, by  Alex Richards, Johanna discovers that her mother's death was not accidental.
  • Incarceration or Shakespearean study: that is the choice in Sentenced to Shakespeare, by Iris Dorbian
  • Amelia, created by two unlikely allies to combat injustices in their school, does not exist in Erin Gough's Amelia Westlake was Never Here
  • TWO copies of Ready Player 2, (sequel to Ready Player One)
  • and MORE

Flavorful fiction of the fantastic includes...

  • Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners trilogy (Steelheart; Calamity; Firefight), set in a world with superpowered tyrants.
  • Brandon Sanderson's Rhythm of War (a doorstop of a book, and part 4 of the Stormlight Archive)
  • The first volume of The Wheel of Time (the so-big-the-author-died-and-Brandon-Sanderson-had-to-finish-the-12th-to-14th-books  and  soon-to-be-a-Prime-streaming-tv-show series):  The Eye of the World (a book so big it got split into two volumes, From the Two Rivers and Into the Blight).
  • The magical realism of Elatsoe by Apache author Darcie Little Badger
  • the eco-dystopian The New Wilderness by Diane Cook
  • and Shneider Award winner Mark Oshiro's Each of Us is a Desert

Finally,  for dessert, Poetry ( Postcolonial Love Poem, and An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo; and The Trouble With Poetry, by Billy Collins) and Graphic Novels (Penultimate Quest, by Brown and Glendining).

(Cleaning out the fridge of older leftover short story collections, a few staples needed replacing, including A River Runs Through It; Night Shift; Bluebeard's Egg; I Sing the Body Electric; and others)

Remember, you can checkout via Curbside Pickup! And any book can be ready for pickup as early as today.

Thanks for reading!
