*Corrado Library at Central Catholic High School*: New Materials in the Collection

 

Christmas break is a great time to enjoy a good story, and this gift from the Library Budget to our community, has many to be excited about. Including...

 

National Book Award Nominees like Jason Reynolds'  Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks (10 shorts about the walk home from school), Awaeke Emezi's Pet (a YA Parable about monsters and denial.  Aditionally we add their debut novel Freshwater), and Thirteen Doors, Wolves Behind them All  (Orphans, WWII, Ghost narrator), and we already have Randy Ribay's Patron Saints of Nothing.  (The winner was a non-fiction book... see below).   

 

Jacqueline Woodson's non-YA debut, Red at the Bone, and Tomi Adeyemi's long awaited sequel to Children of Blood and Bone, Children of Virtue and Vengeance.  

 

Delia Owens' Where the Crawdads Sing,  (ask around, many people in the building have read it), and Ruta Sepetys' The Fountains of Silence, set in Franco's Spain in 1957, and weaving historical documents and photography into a dark story in sunny Madrid.  Dominicana, by Angie Cruz, set in NYC in 1965, is the story of a fifteen-year old immigrant from the Dominican Republic. The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna is a generational historical fiction about Italian immigrants.

 

Realistic YA fiction includes Gravity by Sarah Deming, about a young woman's challenges inside and outside of the boxing ring, and Nadine Courtney's All American Muslim Girl (a romance between the titular character and the son of a far-right pundit).  Someday, by Catholic Author's Guild writer Corinna Turner,  is based on kidnappings in Nigeria.  Frankly in Love, by David Yoon, is a story about Frank (Sung-Min) Li,  a Korean-American teenager, and cultural expectations can stand in the way of love.

 

And Fantastical fiction like Deep, by Rivers Solomon, and inspired by a song by the group 'clippng' (featuring Daveed Diggs), that readers of Ta-Nehisi Coates' recent novel may enjoy.  For fast readers (or those that like a hefty tome) Samantha Shannon's The Priory of the Orange Tree offers classic Epic Fantasy.  Queen of the Conquered, by Kacen Callender, is Caribbean-inspired anti-colonial fantasy, and We Set the Dark on Fire is set in  a patriarchal dystopia.

 Slay, by Brittney Morris, is a tale of online gaming and real-world issues

 

And, in-between the real and the fantastic, is Destroy All Monsters, by Sam Miller: Solomon's traumatic brain injury leaves him in his own fantastical realm, and Ash, who was there when he fell, sometimes wishes she could join him there.

 

 

Some of you may have seen the lavish fan-fiction sequel by the Lost guy on HBO, but we now have a copy of on of the most important comics of all time:  Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons'  Watchmen .  It is worth a deep read, and if anyone wants to do a group read, let me know, because I miss teaching it. Open Borders: The Science and Ethics of Immigration is a collaboration between Bryan Caplan, and cartoonist Zach Weinersmith (Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal; Soonish)  that is a detailed examination of a serious topic with humorous art at a readable level.

 

 

 

Two more volumes from DK's "Big Ideas Simply Explained Series" : The Crime Book, and How Technology Works.  These are great ones to flip through.

 

We have two copies of Inspire: Reflective Essays from Students who Learn Differently (mentioned in our PD), as well as The Book in Question: Why and How Reading is in Crisis by Carol Jago, both of which would make good light professional reading over the break. Nicholas Carr's The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains is a few years old, but it is one that still provides some food for thought.

 

One Long River of Song: Notes on Wonder, by Brian Doyle, is already reserved for someone, but you can get on the waiting list.

 

Other stories about people include : I Will Not Fear: My Story of a Lifetime of Building Faith under Fire, by Melba Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine.  Jay-Z: Made in America by Michael Eric Dyson, and The National Team: The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer.
