NEW BOOKS are Good for What Ails You

I say that New Books, not Time, are what heal all wounds... well, maybe not, but sometimes when you're not feeling your best, a new book can really help.  Books also can educate us on what ails the world, and how to move toward cures.

Fiction includes  awaited sequels, award winners, debut novels, and old favorites, starting, fittingly, with Portland local Emily Suvada's This Vicious Cure (book 3 in The "Mortal Coil" series).  Award Winners and nominees include the National Book Award winner Trust Exercise by Susan Choi, 2018 NBA finalist Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.  Other novels by Asian or Asian-American authors include Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, and Justina Chen's Lovely, Dark, and Deep (about a young woman with extreme light sensetivity
Tochi Onyebuchi moves from fantasy to Afro-futurism with his future-Nigeria set War Girls, Amanda Joy's A River of Royal Blood is African-influenced fantasy, while Charlotte Nicole Davis' The Good Luck Girls is a dark fantasy western, and Morgan Parker's Who Put This Song On is firmly grounded in reality.
We've also added The Secret Commonwealth book 2 of Phillip Pullman's  The Book of Dust series, Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea, and Nic Stone's Jackpot.
Deposing Nathan is a novel of self-understanding, loyalty, and the danger of truth.
Two short story collections Nafissa Thomposn-Spires' Heads of the Colored People (a NBA longlist book) and 19 Love Songs by David Levithan.
There are several books in the list that relate very well to topics covered on our fantastic Human Dignity Summit day.
Indigenous cultural issues and perspectives take the forefront in this batch of books.  Including Fiction from Tim Tingle (When a Ghost Talks, Listen) and Louise Erdrich (La Rose), a comics anthology, This Place: 150 Years Retold,  centered on stories of indigenous Canadians, and two works of non-fiction As We Have Always Done: Indigenous Freedom through Radical Resistance by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and What the Eagle SeesIndigenous Stories of Rebellion and Renewal by Eldon Yellowhorn and Kathy Lowinger.
For those looking for more information about the Democratic Republic of Congo, both its successes and struggles:   Congo: The Epic History of a People (David van Reybrouck), and Dancing in the Glory of Monsters:The Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa
Issues relating to Black Americans are covered in Michael Bennett's Things that Make White People Uncomfortable (adapted for young adults), Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (Monique W. Morris), and On the Other Side of Freedom: The Case for Hope (by activist and organizer, DeRay Mckesson).   For our ongoing discussions of Culturally Responsive Teaching, we add Dr. Jamila Lyiscott's  (who is also the CRT advisor for Expeditionary Learning) Black Appetite. White Food.:Issues of Race, Voice, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom  and For White Folks who Teach in the Hood... and the Rest of Y'all Too: Reality Pedagogy and Urban Education by Christopher Emdin.

In support of English IV's research into Mental Health and Addiction, we add the memoir Beautiful Boy by David Sheff, Cracked Not Broken, the novel Heroine by Mindy McGinnis, a Time special issue on The Science of Addiction, and two copies of Nicholas Kristof's Tightrope: American's Reaching for Hope

All this, plus  books on Mythology (The Mythology Book), Team Building (Culture is King: 5 Keys to Creating a High-Performing Team), modern American resistance movements (Necessary Trouble: Americans in Revolt), the DVD for The Sun is Also a Star,  and Robert Putnam's Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis (and MORE!).  See the full list below
