Sure, we lost an hour this weekend, but these NEW BOOKS in the library are 100% guaranteed* to help you make up for it, and propel you forward towards enjoyment, education, and excellence...
 
In honor of people who are Women (and also of Women's History Month) we add bell hooks'  feminism is for everybody, as well as The Feminism Book (Big Ideas, Simply Explained), and in preparation for National Poetry Month (April), the witch doesn't burn in this one, a collection by poet amanda lovelace. In non-fiction, we add Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls.
 
Other books by and about women include two from Renee Watson (Piecing Me Toghther): a reprint of her debut,  What Momma Left Me, and , Watch Us Rise (co-written with Ellen Hagan), a story of two best friends and their Intersectional-Feminist club.   We also have Angie Thomas' On the Come Up, set in Garden Heights, just like The Hate U Give  (that one is checked out already, but we'll be ordering more).
 
On student recommendation we've added Trail of Lightning, by Rebecca Roanhorse, the first volume of a new series (The Sixth World) set in a post-climate-apocalypse world with a Native American woman monster-hunter as the lead character.
 
We've also completed our set of next year's Oregon Battle of the Books list: Mary's  Monster: Love, Madness, and How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein  (an illustrated novel-in-verse), The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik (Hypnotism, Surrealism, Diagrams), and  Portland-local Emily Suvada's This Mortal Coil (book 1 of a series, genetics, technology, apocalypse! (also "coil" is another word for "spring").
 
We also add TWO winners of the ALA's Schneider Family Award (honoring a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for children and young adults).
  • Five Flavors of Dumb (by Antony John, 2011 Winner)  about a young deaf woman trying to manage the rock band "Dumb" to stardom,  and
  • Anger is a Gift ( by Mark Oshiro, 2019 winner) about an Oakland teen coping with panic attacks, and life, after his father's death.
Another award worthy title is Printz Honor book, A Heart in a Body in the World, by Deb Caletti, about a young woman on a transcontinental run trying to work through a recent life tragedy.
