*Corrado Library at Central Catholic High School*: New Materials in the Collection

Books are for reading, and reading is good for you (whether you like to or not), and has value beyond self-improvement.   (someone writing this email just went to a Professional Development event about the cultural and educational value of reading)....

 

Fiction builds empathy, so here's a lot of fiction to feel good about:

 

Let's start with endings: two long awaited series finales.  The last book of Stephanie Garber's Caraval series, Finale  and the final book of the Arc of a Scythe series The Toll, by Neal Shusterman.  The latter series is highly recommended.  Not an ending, but a continuation, is A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney, sequel to A Blade So Black.

Butterfly Yellow is Thanhha Lai's YA debut about a family separated while fleeing the Viet Nam war to Texas. The Grief Keeper, by Alexandra Villasante, is also a tale of immigration, where Marisol, fleeing El Salvador is allowed to stay in the United States on the condition that she become a vessel for the grief of others.

 

Leigh Bardugo (whose Grishaverse world is coming soon to a streaming service near your screens) has her first non-YA novel, The Ninth House,  magical realism and murder among the secret societies of the Ivy League elite.  Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron, is the next addition to the growing body of African-influenced fantasy writing.

 

Burying My Dead is a mystery, centered around Lone Fir Cemetery, by local author Bettie Denny. Jerk, California is a Schneider Family Award-winner, and #ownvoices story about a young man with Tourette syndrome.

 

 Fans of You're Welcome Universe or of young relationships may be interested in The Silence Between Us, by Alison Gervais. And those who enjoyed The Hate U Give or All American Boys will want to look into Kekla Magoon's (How it Went Down) Light It Up, a series of vignettes in the aftermath of a police shooting. For those hardy few who liked our past two years' summer reading options, the short story collection Take the Mic: Fictional Stories of Everyday Resistance (edited by Bethany C. Morrow, with stories by Jason Reynolds, Samira Ahmed, Keah Brown, Darcie Little Badger, and others) is sure to resonate. 

 

Ann Davila Cardinal's Five Midnights,  and Jennifer Mathieu's (Moxie) The Liars of Mariposa Island both take place on islands in the Caribbean. One is a supernatural murder mystery, the other an inter-generational tale of the meaning of truth and the power and danger of family.  

 

Matt Mendez's  Barely Missing Everything (Latinx coming of age) and Kim Liggett's The Grace Year (a dystopian dark-fairy tale with a feminist message) are both on the list of titles for Oregon's "Mock Prinz" competition (wherein readers try to forecast what book will win the Prinz Award this year).

 

Noted Science Fiction/Fantasist Gene Wolfe passed away in April, we've added the two volumes of his 4-partBooks of the New Sun   series (Shadow & Claw, and Sword & Citadel) which are subtly laced with Catholicism  (as I've been learning while reading this great series of Read Throughs on Tor publishing's website).

 

Pair  Ariel Kaplan's novel We Regret to Inform You: an Overachiever's Guide to College Rejection with Paul Tough's non-fiction book on college (The Years that Matter Most: How College Makes or Breaks Us)
