Short list of NEW BOOKS for a Short Month.

February is upon us, and it's the greatest month of the year (every day in February has to be  6%-10% more effective than days in other months), and the best way to start the greatest months is with a short list of books (each 6%-10% better than regular books).

 
February is, of course, also Black History Month. Hugo Award Three-peat author N.K. Jemisin raises (not 'begs') the question How Long 'Til Black Future Month in her collection of speculative fiction short stories.
 
We have some additional copies of Multnomah County's Everyone Reads book about the "F" Word : We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.  It's a quick book that we should all be reading.
 
Furthering our mission of social justice and understanding we add: 
  • The Displaced: Refugee Writers on Refuee Lives;  
  • The Other Slavery: the Uncovered story of Indian Enslavement in America; 
  • (Don't) Call Me Crazy: 33 Voices Start the Conversation about Mental Health; and
  • the Graphic Novel (side-by-side, bilingual) Voces Sin Fronteras / Our Stories Our Truth
And teachers interested in Justice, Equity, and serving all Students should try Cornelius Minor's We Got This: Equity, Access, and the Quest to Be Who our Students Need Us to Be. 
 
Looking ahead to another great month  (April, aka National Poetry Month), we have a book for the year: Poem-a-Day: 365 Poems for Every Occasion.
 
Two more titles in the excellent Big Ideas series from DK: The Religions Book and The History Book.  On the way are books on Ecology, Feminism, and more.
 
Also on the way (once they are published in about 2 weeks) are summer reading author Angie Thomas' (The Hate U Give) new book On the Come Up  and Renee Watson's (Piecing Me Together) Watch Us Rise.
 
Those interested in the "Robber Barons" or "Captains of Industry" may enjoy  The Tycoons:how Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J.P. Morgan invented the American supereconomy; or   The Associates: Four Capitalists Who Created California, or The Inventor and the Tycoon: A Gilded Age Murder and the Birth of Moving Pictures.       
 
In addition, Martha Brockenbrough's biography Unpresidented: a Biography of Donald Trump has received good reviews, and is now available, as is the 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual.
 
Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar's Map of Salt and Stars is the story of a young woman returning to Syria with her family, and the stories she tells of a young woman in 12th century Syria.
 
Other fiction includes: the conclusion of Donna Frietas' "Unplugged" Trilogy (The Mind Virus) and her novel The Healer, Neal Shusterman's Bruiser (by request), When Morning Comes,  set against the backdrop of 1970s Apartheid South Africa, and Jacqueline Woodson's If You Come Softly, about a multi-racial, cross-religious teen relationship.
 
And that's pretty much all of them!  Come by to borrow them, or just to say 'hi' before February ends!
