NEW BOOKS for International Women in the Library(and everyone else, too)

In a fortuitous and unplanned turn of events,  an order of NEW BOOKS  on International Women's Day 2018...
 
Whether it's Broad Strokes : 15 women who made art and made history, in that order,  the MIT Press's Brief History of Feminism (in graphic form, translated from German by Sophie Lewis), the Notorious RBG's,  My Own Words, or Portland's dearly departed Ursula K. Le Guin's No Time to Spare: Thinking about What Matters, women's voices, achievements, and others who have #Press(ed)forProgress, take the forefront in this batch of books. Materials by or about women are highlighted in Purple (though not Pantone 18-3838)...
 
bell hooks' Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism was, unfortunately, missing from our collection until today, and Seattle's Ijeoma Oluo raises the question/statement So You Want to Talk About Race . Self proclaimed "Bad Feminist" Roxanne Gay wrote the scripts for the graphic novel,  Black Panther : world of Wakanda,  featuring two members of the Dora Milaje (the elite warriors (from the movie) who are based in part on warrior women from 18th-century Dahomey (modern day Benin)).   Also the 2nd and 3rd volumes of Ta-Nehisi Coates'  Black Panther comics are in stock as well.
If you need to brush up on your history in regards to the African Continent (and, let's be honest, most of us do), we've added two short, excellent, volumes from Oxford UP's African World Histories series:Bantu Africa: 3500 BCE to Present and Transatlantic Africa: 1440-1888.
Nigerian, and Nigerian-American, women (and a few men, but mostly the women) have been making a name for themselves in the Speculative Fiction realm as of late. Tomi Adeyemi's magical Children of Blood and Bone joins Nnedi Okorafor's Akata Witch in our collection.  
Other fiction includes Portland-born Renee' Watson's Piecing Me Together (about a young Black woman attending a predominantly White private school in Portland), Atia Abawi's A Land of Permanent Goodbyes, (about a young Syrian Refugee), Amy Reed's  The Nowhere Girls (about teens who rise up to resist sexism in their school, and support a former student shamed for accusing her rapists), and Tanaz Bhathera's  A Girl Like That (about the life, and death, of a young woman in Saudi Arabia, who was much more than what society assumed her to be).
  Women's rights are human rights, and the spirit of activism is so evident right now:  find inspiration for the future in,  When we fight, we win! : twenty-first-century social movements and the activists that are transforming our world  and from the past in  Alice Paul and the fight for women's rights : from the vote to the equal rights amendment.  Reading the Paul Wellstone chapter of  The 100 greatest Americans of the 20th century : a social justice hall of fame, reminded me of his quotation "We all do better, when we all do better." (you can put the emphasis wherever you'd like in that sentence, and it's almost always good).
If you're interested in graphic novels on Social Justice issues, we also have you covered:  have a look at Verax:  the true history of whistleblowers, drone warfare, and mass surveillance, before it has a look at you.  The plight of refugees in Calais is illustrated by activist Kate Evans' Threads from the Refugee Crisis, and we've added a second copy of The Silence of our Friends, and a replacement copy of Maus.  (plus the aforementioned MIT Brief History of Feminism and When We Fight We Win).
Dr. Kelly Weinersmith and her husband (a cartoonist) add Soonish: ten emerging technologies that'll improve and/or ruin everything, an irreverent and partially illustrated exploration of future technology.  World History 9 is already eating it up.
All that plus a documentary on Psychiatric asylums (Guilty Except for Insanity), Pirates (Daughter of the Pirate King) the second book in a fantasy series (Words of Radiance), making money (Side Hustle: from idea to income in 27 days) and Poems For Listeners (by Naomi Shihab Nye).
